Resetting the Self

Sometimes you need a personal mental and emotional self-care reset and taking a trip somewhere relaxing can fit the bill. Look for a place you feel a connection to, that offers the type of attractions, amenities, and opportunities that will help you feel refreshed, restored, and revived. You may even find you like a destination so much you consider making it your new home! Improving Lives Counseling Services can be an important resource on your journey, especially if there are particular mental or emotional issues you feel would benefit from professional consultation.

Seattle, Washington

According to U.S. News, Seattle is one of the top cities of choice for people looking to make a move. In addition to natural beauty—both water and mountains—it’s a place for inner reflection and self-discovery. Eastlake’s Three Moon Collective is a place to go for spiritual wellness while Capitol Hill’s Ritual House is known for its many healing gatherings, yoga retreats, and a dedicated commitment to inclusivity and social change.

While Seattle has an above-average cost of living—the median home price is nearly $760,000—it balances that with a burgeoning job market, which makes it a great place to relocate to, especially if you’re in the tech industry.

Sedona, Arizona

If you’re seeking out a place of natural beauty and spirituality, there’s no place quite like Sedona. In addition to the pure majesty of the red rock formations, you can stay at any number of high-end resorts that feature specialized spa treatments and healing rituals.

You absolutely must commune with nature in Sedona—the mountain city is home to “spiritual vortexes” at Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, and Boynton Canyon. You can also find spiritual healing, readings, and holistic health retreats nearby. The cost of living is slightly higher than average in Sedona, primarily due to housing costs—home prices average in the upper $600s.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe has long attracted shamans, artists, and spiritualists, who are often attracted to pueblo ruins and the energy of the desert. One of the best places to find and recenter yourself is the El Santuario de Chimayo. The site is a personal pilgrimage for many truth-seekers.

The Upaya Zen Center is another spot to visit, offering weekly dharma walks in its sanctuary and providing free meditation sessions every weekday. Santa Fe’s cost of living is just slightly above average, again due to housing costs, with homes averaging in the mid-$400s. Other costs are lower than average, including healthcare and utilities.

Kremmling, Colorado

If you’re a naturalist, communing with nature in the primitive hot springs on the Colorado River is sure to connect you with Mother Earth. Primitive camping options are available, and most visitors either hike or kayak to the springs. The town of Kremmling offers all kinds of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, from horseback riding to ice fishing and ATV wilderness adventures. If you’re interested in living in the region, you’re sure to enjoy a below-average cost of living, with housing prices averaging under $400K and transportation, utilities, and groceries below national par.

New York City, New York

While it is far removed from a commune with nature, New York offers several spots for relaxing and resetting. The city is home to several meditation centers including the New York Insight Meditation Center, where you can sit with your breath. If you’d rather use your breath to cheer you can also find tickets for the Yankees while you’re in town. Regardless of what you’d like to do, you can find it in New York.

If you find yourself falling in love with a city once you spend time there for a holistic reset, and are considering a move, Well + Good recommends doing your due diligence first. You can research housing rentals online, searching by price, square footage, number of beds and baths, and other amenities. You can even take 3D tours to get a feel for different locations. When you’re searching, think about proximity to schools, potential workplaces, and how you envision you and your family settle in. If you’re still on the fence, secure a short-term rental to make sure it’s a good fit all-around!
