Neurofeedback Therapy

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder that can make it difficult for a person to focus on tasks. It is not merely about being susceptible to distractions. ADHD is a complicated issue that manifests itself in a wide range of different ways—from inability to sit still to challenges with organization.

ADHD is often treated with drugs, including methylphenidates (such as Ritalin) or amphetamines (such as Adderall). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 62 percent of American children diagnosed with ADHD are currently taking some form of medication. Of course, medication is not the only option. Further, it is also not always the best option—at least not without additional behavioral support. Neurofeedback therapy is a safe and effective alternative ADD/ADHD treatment for children.

Neurofeedback Treatment for ADHD in Oklahoma

With neurofeedback therapy, young children are trained to become more aware of the responses in their own mind. Essentially, neurofeedback is a type of brain training. It is an advanced, but non-invasive technique that uses EEG sensors to monitor a patient’s brain activity.

A patient is then given audio and visual interpretations of that activity, so that they can understand what is happening on a physiological level. In other words, a child is given feedback. Using that feedback, a therapist can work with a child to:

Improve their attention and focus;

Better regulate their emotions; and

Gain control of their own behavior.

While neurofeedback therapy may sound complicated, the entire process can be translated and simplified to meet the needs of an individual child. The results have been impressive. Studies have shown that neurofeedback therapy is as effective in treating ADHD as is a large dose of Ritalin.
